Before a dentist will decide on putting a crown on one of their patient’s, they will try many other alternatives to crowns first.  A lot of patients just want this procedure done to improve the looks of their teeth.  With the new porcelain & metal crowns, it is understandable why they would opt for this to be done, but just making teeth look good will not fix the problem.  There are many alternatives to crowns for those patients to choose from.  Any of them will be done before any drastic measures are taken.

When a patient’s tooth is not cracked or broken off, then a simple, yet effective, procedure can be done.  Cosmetic tooth whitening is a procedure that uses bleach that will penetrate beneath the porous texture of the enamel of a tooth in order to brighten it.  This method is safe to the patients and very quick to do.  The effects will not last forever, but the teeth will be noticed by everyone.  They will have a healthy glow to them.  This procedure is done more commonly than not.

Another way of getting that pearly white look is by attaching porcelain veneers to the teeth.  They will stick directly to the surface of the patient’s teeth.  They are made from a very thin layer of porcelain which allows it to last for a very long time.  This, and many other alternatives to crowns, is a popular substitute to the more dramatic method of getting a crown put on a tooth.

Dental bonding can be used to replace any fillings that may fall out over time.  This process is usually done for tiny fractures on the tooth but could serve as one of the alternatives to crowns.

Any and all other options will be considered before a dentist will do any serious procedures.  This and extracting is always going to be a last resort only.
