The practice of good oral hygiene can help prevent gum disease and other problems that can occur.  Keeping good habits at home, along with regular visits to the dentist, is the best way to keep teeth healthy and clean.  Probably the most important tool to have is the toothbrush.  Dentists say that the best kind to get is the kind with soft, round bristles.  Many people tend to think that the harder the bristle, the better the brush.  That isn’t the case according to the experts.    Another false truth is electric toothbrushes work the best.  It may seem like it, but nothing is better than a manual brush and good technique.  The size of the brush in proportion with the mouth is a key to good oral hygiene as well.

The right toothbrush is almost useless without the right toothpaste to go on it.  There are many different ingredients that companies use to put in toothpaste to do different things.  Some focus on tartar control and whitening the teeth, while others try to make the gums stronger.  Before modern toothpaste came along, baking soda was used to clean teeth.  Companies still add this to their toothpaste because it is very effective.  Dentists say the most important ingredient of all, though, is fluoride.  This helps to strengthen the teeth, preventing tooth decay.

Oral hygiene also consists of flossing.  This is very important as well because this cleans in between the teeth.  Flossing gets the places where toothbrushes just cannot get.  People use many excuses on why they cannot floss on a regular basis.  Some say they do not have enough time, and others claim that it hurts their gums and causes bleeding.  The bleeding happens when consumers haven’t flossed in a long time, and the gums already have some form of disease.  This will get better and stop.  Flossing after every meal is preferred.

At home practices combined with regular trips to the dentist will create a habit of great oral hygiene.
